EMMA LAWRENSON – STATEMENT

I draw inspiration from a wide variety of sources: referring to shadows, reflections, the spaces inbetween things. My work is often inspired by architecture; and more recent times, nature and organic forms.

‘The best starting point for a piece of work is something observed by chance. I love catching the essence of things as they appear momentarily’.

I love colour, shape and simplicity and have always been influenced by artists such as Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt and Richard Tuttle. I use screenprinting processes to produce my work, I find I can create clean and crisp images this way. I enjoy the process of carefully building up images with layers of solid flat colours to explore shape and form, sometimes adding painterly marks, stripes or textures.

I studied printmaking at the Royal College of Art in the late 90’s where I won the Oriana award for my M.A show. I exhibit extensively in the UK as well as selling my work all over the world. I am currently working towards a solo show – ‘uncluttered’ at the WYPW in September and a solo show at the Duckett and Jeffrey gallery in 2012.

I recently won the ‘Flourish Award’ for excellence in printmaking.
