Artist Statement

Three years ago I visited the Deep Submarinum in Hull at night time, the aquaria was so much more energy filled than I had ever witnessed during my previous day time visits.
I observed the writhing invertebrate antics and was inspired.
I often work in a way that does not have a prescribed agenda. My work has a familiar range of divisive inclusions which constitute my voice, my syntax, my visual narrative. I energise my pictures and sculpture by giving them a suggestion of the potential for movement, implying social grouping and interaction of the characters, the colour rich, textured surfaces, and the manipulation of scale purport strength and vulnerability.
My work is firmly rooted in the tangible experiences of a real world that is being explored through
amalgamated ingredients; subject matter which is familiar yet eludes confident identification.
It would be presumptuous of me to attempt an explanation about the heart and meaning of the work. There has been a maturing process in the way my creative direction has evolved. My inspirational feed has progressed beyond the initial fuelling from the Deep and I am still very enthusiastic about the development of ideas.
After two years of making and pondering I am still unsure what the work is about, if I did know I would loose my intense engagement with the quest.
For me the thrill of being an Artist is the opportunity to navigate through a range of ideas without a map.
I respond to design; I use the devices and media of Art and Design to fashion arrested moments.
I absorb and integrate connecting references from limitless sources, some purposefully and deliberately, others I am unaware of, I might identify their intrusion shortly after the work has been made, sometimes the subconscious inclusion may not announce its incorporation for years.
I exhibit my work, to entertain and enchant, inviting visitors to share the mystery and adventure.
I exhibit to further my own comprehension of my Fine Art calling.
But most of all I exhibit my work in an attempt to justify the obsessive, self indulgent preoccupation
I have with my own creative practice.
